WASHINGTON, D.C. - Police say a man is facing charges after he was caught carrying a rifle and an improvised explosive device on Capitol Hill on Friday afternoon.
It all started around 10:45 a.m. when the man, 27-year-old Christopher Shelton Timmons, stopped and asked a Capitol Hill Police officer for directions at 2nd and Independence Avenue SE. That officer noticed a rifle case. He put the man in handcuffs, and then searched his Jeep Cherokee.
Inside the vehicle, police found a rifle, ammunition, and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device.
Timmons was arrested and taken to Capitol Police Headquarters for processing.
Capitol Police evacuated the area, telling everyone around to get away until the scene was secured. A new emergency alert system at the Library of Congress told employees through a PA system and email alert that they should stay away from all the windows.
Late Friday afternoon, authorities announced that the explosive device was in fact a grenade, and it was hauled away in a protective chamber to be detonated far from Capitol Hill.
Timmons is charged with having a concealed deadly weapon, and additional charges are pending.
The area where the incident occurred has since been reopened, and no one was hurt.
