VIDEO: A follow up now to a story ABC 4 broke Wednesday about hateful flyers distributed with a newspaper in a Salt Lake neighborhood. Now the Federal Bureau of Investigation involved.

After seeing our report Wednesday night the FBI called ABC 4 asking for copies of the anti-Semitic and racist flyers. So we went to FBI headquarters and handed them over to Special Agent in Charge Tim Fuhrman. He says they're looking at them as possible evidence and are opening a hate crime investigation, “There's a line between free speech and criminal activity that can potentially be crossed with something like this.”

There's still a lot investigators don't know yet like who's responsible and what their intentions were. Fuhrman says motive can play a big part in potential charges filed, “You can potentially commit a federal violation if you are attempting to intimidate individuals to move from the residence.”

U of U Police Chief Scott Folsom realizes this can be a difficult case to crack. Folsom explains, “One of the challenges is simply to find out where the copies that were used to distribute the other literature came from.”

The person or people responsible can pick up copies of this paper at the U, a local coffee shop, or any one of those newspaper dispensers while supplies last, making it that much more difficult for agents to find the suspects.

At the bottom of the flyers is information on the National Socialist Movement based in Michigan. They've used these flyers to proclaim that interracial couples will destroy pure bloodlines, and that Jews are polluting the minds of our American government.

Resident Steve Leonard says he’s appalled and wants the culprits caught, “I hope whoever was in charge of this or the perpetrators he or she or whomever I hope they catch them and deal with them lawfully.”

The editor at the Daily Utah Chronicle has told us that the paper has nothing to do with the flyers that were rubber-banded to them. They’re upset their name has been linked to these kinds of messages.
