The state rested its case in the Letalvis Cobbins murder trial after the Knox County Medical Examiner testified about the torture and autopsies of victims Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
Dr. Mileusnic-Polchan testified that Newsom was shot in the head, upper shoulder and lower back. The bullet to the head was his cause of death.
The Medical Examiner described bruising indicating that Newsom was raped with an object, probably hours before he was killed.
What was done to Newsom was probably "too complex" to be done by one person, Dr. Mileusnic-Polchan said. He had no defensive wounds and was likely outnumbered and overpowered.
Christian's bound body was crammed in five large trash bags in a trash can in the kitchen. Christian was alive when she was put in the trash can and died of suffocation.
"She died in the trash can," the medical examiner testified. The cause was lack of oxygen. She had a plastic bag over her head and her eyes were open.
"This was no simple rape," she said. It was much more severe. Christian was raped orally first, and eventually wrapped in the trash bags and put in the can. She believes Christian died within three to five minutes after the bag was put over her head.
