Ashley’s daughter, Ursula “Yoyo” Sharon Ashley, died unexpectedly in her sleep on Aug. 2. She, like her father, was a diabetic.
Hall said that Ashley had been depressed over the deaths but that he never could have imagined that it had gotten this bad.
It could have been the diabetes that drove him into an uncontrollable rage, said his sister-in-law, Katherine Johnson.
“He was a very sick man. When his sugar was up, he would get very agitated. He would get fidgety and jumpy,” she said.
Other than the few times she saw her brother-in-law express anger when his blood-sugar levels would climb too high, he was a soft-spoken man, Johnson said.
A love of God and people is what guided Ashley’s life, said the Rev. Willie Duncan of Mount Olive Baptist Church, a close family friend.

Ashley, 63, a former city worker, was killed in an exchange of gunfire, Mayor Jacques Roy said. Police had used explosives to enter the building.
