Police have charged four people after stumbling upon a Toronto home that contained $40 million worth of ecstasy and drug-making equipment.

Three undercover York Region officers were in the McCowan Road and Steeles Avenue area on an unrelated matter on Friday when they saw three men breaking into the home at 60 Penmarric Pl.

As they were arresting the suspects, the detectives noticed an ecstasy lab inside the suburban home.

An eight-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy were found in the drug and chemical-filled home, police said.

The children were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure before being turned over to the Children's Aid Society.

"It's very troubling to find children in these kind of laboratories, very troubling," Toronto Staff Insp. Don Campbell told reporters.

"(The culprits) are out there for the profit and they're not concerned about the children."

Toronto police seized about 214 kilograms of ecstasy powder and 140,000 tablets. Officers also found four tablet presses, tablet dies and a cutting agent.

The pills were brightly coloured and stamped with various designs, including Tweety Bird and a dolphin, police said.

"I would suggest any parent that find their children in possession of these -- it's not candy -- and it can have a debilitating affect on the kids in the short-term and on our communities in the long-term," said York Deputy Chief Bruce Herridge.

Three men and one woman face charges of producing a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime.

Charged are:

* Yun Kai Wen, 40;
* Wen Chao Huang, 37;
* Jia Zhe He, 20; and
* Wan (Chuck) Leong, 45.

Ze Wai Wong -- alleged to be the leader of an international Ecstasy (MDMA) ring that supplied 15 % of the U.S. ecstasy market -- now faces charges in the United States for drug trafficking and conspiracy charges stemming from an indictment in the Southern District of New York. If convicted, Wong faces a maximum of 40 years in prison on all charges. Ze Wai Wong was arrested in Canada on March 31, 2004, along with more than 130 defendants in 16 cities across the United States, as part of an investigation dubbed Operation Candy Box.

Operation Candy Box revealed that bulk quantities of MDMA tablets were being produced in clandestine labs in Canada and smuggled into the United States. This operation spanned 16 U.S. cities while Canadian authorities conducted related investigations in the cities of Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal. In August 2003, three fully operational tableting laboratories were discovered and dismantled by Canadian officials as a result of Operation Candy Box. According to information developed during the investigation, the organization was capable of distributing up to one million MDMA tablets per month in the U.S. and Canada. This organization utilized a sophisticated money laundering network of money remitters and travel agencies in both the U.S. and Canada to launder millions of dollars in drug proceeds. Seizures in Operation Candy Box totaled 407,000 MDMA tablets, 1,370 pounds of marijuana, 6.5 pounds of methamphetamine, and $8.9 million in currency.
